Program recipients are recent immigrants attending Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools, and patients in the pediatric department of hematology/oncology at UNC HospitalsATI’s iPad project serves pediatric patients in the hematology/oncology wards at UNC Hospitals. Because the iPad can be easily sterilized, it allows even the most isolated pediatric patients to create art without risk of exposure to germs.Originally aimed at young refugees from Burma, the Burma Art Therapy Program provides individual and group therapy to refugee students in the Chapel Hill Carrboro School system. Because of language and cultural barriers, traditional talk therapy is often not an option for refugee students, and art serves as a unique and innovative medium for expression. Currently about 85% of refugee students in the program are from Burma.
