Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate
Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate (BRMA) is a comprehensive support program for middle and high school students of color (African American, Latino, Burmese, Karen) in the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools. BRMA provides students with mentoring, tutoring, advocacy, enrichment, leadership training, and scholarship support services.
Founded in 1995, the Blue Ribbon Mentor-Advocate program is designed to reduce the achievement gap between students of color and their peers. BRMA uses a strengths-based approach, seeking out students who have demonstrated: 1. Untapped potential, 2. A desire to seek time with adults, and 3. Parental support.
90% of mentor/mentee relationships last beyond the initial two-year commitment. The program has placed all of its participants in college, and has had only one individual drop out of the program in 15 years. The program serves kids from “across the spectrum of academic achievement,” says Executive Director Graig Meyer. BRMA does not, however, serve students with severe emotional or mental health issues that might overwhelm a volunteer. BRMA also operates the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI), which conducts a summer camp and year-round service opportunities for youth. YLI serves both BRMA mentees and other CHC students, including majority students.
