Fusion Youth Radio
Fusion Youth Radio (at the Marian Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History) is dedicated to furthering equity, inspiring creativity, and promoting dialogue among youth from many different backgrounds by providing them opportunities to tell their stories in their own words. We offer one-on-one mentorship of youth producers in the preparation and production of a bi-weekly, live youth radio program. Participation in the program extends beyond production meetings to include opportunities for more general guidance and support from mentors. The program provides a platform for youth spoken word artists from around the Triangle region and a forum for discussion among area high school students.Fusion Youth Radio (FYR) features young people seeking to make their voices a part of history through creative, youth-produced media. FYR is rooted in the idea that all of us deserve opportunities to tell our stories in our own words. We offer a summer audio production workshop and broadcast a one hour, bi-weekly live show that airs on WXYC Chapel Hill 89.3FM throughout the school year. We believe that young people can and should work together to take active roles in shaping the future of our communities. Our name honors the legacy of the Fusion politics movement of North Carolina in the 1890s, a bi-racial coalition that gained power across the state. We seek to bring together youth with many backgrounds to create the sort of community that not even the “Fusionists” imagined.
