Human Rights Center of Chapel Hill & Carrboro

Human Rights Center of Chapel Hill & Carrboro

The Human Rights Center seeks to advocate and provide resources for those who suffer exploitation and abuses of power by working with community organizations and local residents to address the needs of underrepresented communities in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. The Human Rights Center serves as an entry point for community and university organizations to work with the Abbey Court community in Carrboro. Abbey Court consists of approximately 70% undocumented economic immigrants, and 25% political refugees. While much of HRC efforts focus on fighting for legal and economic privileges of the communities they represent, youth programs are also a key focus of the center. To date, the HRC has connected with other organizations to provide an after school program (with volunteer teachers from Mary Scroggs Elementary), weekly recreational activities (such as pick-up soccer matches), and other initiatives such as cooking classes and computer lab access. Overall, the HRC attempts to fill in the gaps in youth services not provided for residents because of socioeconomic, linguistic and cultural barriers facing these communities.
