Play Street Soccer creates safe, secure environments for youth in low-income communities to play soccer in order to engage in creative problem solving, character development, and community building. Play Street Soccer sets up weekly, informal “street style” soccer matches in 3 communities in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area: Abbey Court, Rogers Rd., and Estes Park. The goal is not only to provide a safe, secure environment for youth to participate in physical activity, but to allow youth to dictate the flow of the matches from start to finish- they serve as not only the players, but the referees and coaches as well. Because of the informal nature of the soccer matches, PSS hopes to create an environment where players can creatively solve problems, build teamwork, develop leadership, and ultimately, create a closer community.
