Children in lower income homes have an opportunity to participate in social and educational enrichment activities, with help from the SKJAJA Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization in Chapel Hill. The fund was created in September 2008 by Eric and Charlotte White to not only provide funding for children who might not be able to afford such activities, but also to teach an important lesson about citizenship. Each child who receives funding is asked to “pay it forward,” or do a good deed for someone else without expecting anything in return. The SKJAJA Fund is a volunteer organization that depends on the support of the community.SKJAJA Fund has funded over 125 children in Chapel Hill-Carrboro for various activities including:

Summer camp
Sports team participation
Piano/music lessons
Class field trips
Team uniform purchasing
Oversees class opportunities

The recipients have performed a variety of “pay it forward” projects including:

Tutoring fellow students
Babysitting or caretaking of elderly
Participating in school/grounds clean-up days
Volunteering at local non-profits
Making cards for children in hospital
Creating a toiletry drive for Haiti storm victims
